When it comes to Touch Typing, I have to surrender to my wife. She is just fast. She can do more than 55 wpm with accuracy of 99% and can still smile at me. I can only do 45 wpm (in the good day when Uranus and Saturn are in alignment) with 95% accuracy. Most of the time I am just lazy typist who peek the keyboard all the time.
The Stumble
A few weeks ago, as she prepares to start her maternity leave, she stumble upon a website about data entry. Knowing the industry inside out, she is very attracted with this sales letter. Check it out:
- Data entry job, work from home
- Can be done at any 24 hours a day
- Just filling web form, cut and paste, all material provided
- Make $250 a day and there is no limit
Wow, sound like perfect part time job for stay home mum. Lucky for her (and me) she checked with me first when she about to pay with Pay Pal the $49 ‘entry fee’. Why? Because this kind of “data entry” is a classic SCAM.
I explain to her that it’s not data entry job, it’s marketing job called Affiliate Marketing. The “web form” is Google AdWords’ form to create pay per click advertising that need to be paid upfront. She gave me that look as she check the FAQ on that website.
She found the relevant entry on the FAQ: “You may choose to use paid method to get better result. But our program is also designed to be used with free method” said the website without further explanation.
In regards of payment of $250 a day, that’s only happened if the ads can sell the product worth $400-$500 a day as it’s just some percentage of the sale, paid as commission. Although the $250 a day is possible, but it can only be achieve if there are about 10-15 sale a day. So if the conversion rate is 2%, there should be 750 unique visitor a day to the sales letter.
“Perhaps you’re right…” she whispers..
My Revenge
I just feel a bit angry that such scam still go around these days. I mean if my wife almost got trapped, I would bet there are many hundreds if not thousands innocent internet users out there that will realize that they are victim of a scam further clicks away from that web page.
I am an internet marketer myself, this kind of scam just giving internet marketer and the real data entry business a bad association.
So this is my little revenge: I write 2 articles below that explain the basic of internet marketing and about this classic scam for everybody to be aware of. I put the article to my website which is actually not really ready for launch. But since the topic is quite relevant, let it be a pre-launch.
Perhaps you want to read further about the topic, please read Why Google and ClickBank Ban “Data Entry” Product. If you want to read how affiliate marketing works, click here: The Basic of Affiliate Marketing.
Easy to get trapped such scam as they are really looks good. ( Once, I was pretty sure that nobody will fall victim of that Nigerian Scam stories – because it’s too obvious they are not real. But that’s not the case isn’t it?. Many people believes the story and become victim. So, with this “data entry” job, I can see that many many more will easily get tricked and cheated). So, guys… Just beware of this kind of “data entry” scam !
As for my wife, she went back to her Ninja Trader simulation ! No marketing stuff for her…
